A review of “Writers & Lovers” in 100 words by Catherine Stover
The rest of the opening paragraph of this novel lists the other things the narrator tries not to think about: sex, her boyfriend, death, and her mother who died on vacation last winter. She shows the reader all the cards in her hand, as if to say, “I don’t have to describe my feelings to you because this list tells you everything you need to know.” One reviewer wrote, “I loved this book not just from the first chapter or the first page but from the first paragraph . . .” I agree. Her candor and specificity drew me in.
